Rie Tsukahara

Having grown up in a small town in Nagasaki, Japan, Rie was always curious about the rest of the world, and dreamt of exploring far beyond her small town. Following this drive to explore the world, she decided to pursue a career in the Tourism industry. Landing in Canada in 2011, Rie instantly fell in love with Vancouver - from trying out multicultural cuisines to wandering in the woods - she felt like a Vancouverite in no time! On weekends, she enjoy hiking with her beloved dog and friends.

What one thing in Canada should you experience at least once in your life?

I recommend Hiking to Garibaldi Lake in the summer; it’s well worth the trip and the sweat! The 4 hour, moderate hike took me to the beautiful alpine lake surrounded by Glacier Mountains. I made a king-sized sandwich for the trek, which tasted even better with the magnificent landscape in the background.

What is your best travel memory in Canada?

I loved my road trip in Vancouver Island. The drive from Victoria to Tofino had several stunning view points to stop at. Even though it was a bit stormy out, it was so much fun to surf and walk the shore at the famous Long Beach. While warming up by a beach fire, I remember thinking I’d be back again.

Tell us about a special discovery that you’ve made in Canada?

I had my very first winery experience in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. One of the wines that I tasted was ‘Therapy Freudian Sip Wine.’ The cute label of Freud definitely intrigued me. Despite being a newbie in tasting wine, I was entertained by this bottle of wine during a Thanksgiving dinner with my family.
