A coastal British Columbia nature cruise that will take you to remote areas of the Inside Passage.

  • Visit and explore this incredible area with permission from the local Gitga’at, Kitasoo/Xai’Xais, and Haisla First Nations.
  • Sail the Campania Sound and Whale Channel searching for humpback whales.
  • Hike the streams of Princess Royal Island is search of the elusive Kermode Spirit Bear.
  • Search the estuaries of coastal rivers in search of Grizzly Bears feasting on salmon moving upriver to spawn

Canadian Signature Experience

Day 1 Vancouver to Bella Bella This morning depart Vancouver Airport (South Terminal) for your flight to Bella Bella, upon arrival transfer (included) to Shearwater Resort for your overnight stay, rest of the day at leisure.

Day 2 Depart Bella Bella cruising to Great Bear Rain Forest
Late morning transfer back to Bella Bella to board your yacht and meet the crew. Cabins are assigned, and everyone participates in an introductory & safety orientation. Set sail into the Great Bear Rainforest. Each night anchor in a different, secluded anchorage.

Days 3 & 4 Cruising the Foirdland Conservancy For the next two days cruise deep into the coastal mountains to the Fiordland Conservancy, here you will see some spectacular rock faces and impressive waterfalls. Explore remote estuaries and expect to see bears attracted by the spawning salmon. We may visit the native village of Klemtu to see the longhouse that was recently built by the local community.

Days 5 – 8 Cruising Great Bear Rainforest Region Travel along the shore of Princess Royal Island – the best known area for seeing the rare Spirit or Kermode bear. These bears are black bears expressing a genetic variation that results in about ten percent of the population in this area being all white. Visit creeks and river estuaries and keep an eye out along the shore as we travel. Khutze Inlet has a beautiful river valley, an abundance of birdlife and we may see bears along the shore.

Along the was spend 2 days with local Tsimshian Native guides who will take us to their favourite wildlife viewing areas where we will get one of our best chances to spot the elusive Spirit bear. In Whale Channel expect to see humpback whales and will take the time to observe these amazing, 15 metre-long creatures, whenever the opportunity arises.

There will be time to explore the protected waters using our stable sea-kayaks. During daily shore excursions, the onboard naturalist will help identify different coastal plants, animals, birds and marine life and interested participants can help keep a species list for the trip.

Day 9 Arrive Bella Bella, return flight to Vancouver Arrive in Bella Bella mid-morning in time to catch the Pacific Coastal flight back to Vancouver.

Please note: All voyage itineraries are intentionally keep flexible to take advantage of wildlife sightings, weather and tides, and the interests of the group.

Not Included:

Note:

  • All guests are required to sign a liability waiver
  • You have to be able to walk on uneven terrain, climb up and down a ladder on both the Roamer and Odyssey, onto the swim grid and in and out of zodiacs, some- times on slippery shorelines.
  • Non-smoking vessels

What to bring:

  • Rain jacket with hat or attached hood, rain pants
  • Rubber boots (very important)
  • Large towel
  • Shoes, soft soled and non-marking for wearing on deck
  • Warm jacket, sweater, hat and gloves/ mittens
  • Long underwear, socks (wool), t-shirts / base layers
  • Long sleeved shirts / turtlenecks
  • Sandals or water shoes, swimsuit for destinations with hotsprings long pants and shorts
  • personal Items: sunglasses, sun hat, personal medication (clearly labeled), camera, binoculars or spotting scope, small backpack for shore excursions, small flashlight or headlamp, refillable water bottle.

Island Odyssey

Joining us in 2003, this 68 ft ketch, The Island Odyssey is the sister-ship to Island Roamer. Originally built as a luxurious private yacht in 1984, she completed a major renovation in 2003 to update the cabins and all safety systems.

She features 8 private cabins (double occupancy), 3 heads with hot showers and a comfortable salon with a natural history library. On deck, the large deckhouse provides a comfortable spot to watch for wildlife.

On-board adventure equipment includes:

  • Expansive natural history library
  • Binoculars
  • 5 stable sea kayaks – 3 tandem, 2 singles
  • 2 rigid-hulled inflatable skiffs
  • Fishing equipment
  • Evening presentations
  • Hydrophone for listening to whale vocalizations

Run of Ketch Cabin

All cabins are irregular sizes to fit the contours of the ship. Every cabin has accommodation for two people some cabins with double bunks, most with two single bunks, often an upper and lower style. Single travelers may be matched with another single person of the same gender.

The Island Roamer is a custom 68-foot 'ketch, launched in 1983. The boat's design, safety and comfort make her perfect for these trips. She features 8 private cabins (double occupancy), 3 heads with hot showers, a large comfortable lounge with an extensive library, and a well-equipped galley. On deck, the large covered seating area provides protection in all types of weather. The Island Roamer is large enough for comfort, privacy and safety, and small enough to create a good rapport among passengers and crew.

A certified Canadian Ministry of Transport passenger vessel, Island Roamer has all of the safety equipment, electronic navigation aids, and features you would expect from a vessel of her standard. All of our cabins have adequate storage space for your bags, personal items and jackets. Coat hangers and life jackets are stowed in every cabin for your convenience. There is electricity in each room, so you can charge your camera batteries and enjoy a reading light in the evening.
