Barrow is located above the Artic Circle and the northernmost city in the United States, with nearby Point Barrow being the nation's northernmost point. The city and area only has an average of 120 days of temperatures above freezing per year being surrounded by the Arctic Ocean on three sides, and flat tundra stretching some 200 miles (300 km) to the south.

Its short tourism months draw adventurers wishing to ‘dip’ their toes into the Artic Ocean, learn of its old whaling history as well as native northern communities. Direct flights on Alaskan Airlines from Anchorage and other townships make this accessible during the short travel months from late spring to early autumn, as there are no roads connecting from the rest of Alaska.
