Dawson City

Dawson City, set beside the Yukon River in the Yukon Territory sustains a population of over 1,300 residents, however each year the area plays host to over 60,000 visitors. The draw card? Gold! Well gold panning nowadays for the visitors who may want give it a try.

Back in the late 1800’s, Dawson City was the centre of the Klondike Gold Rush drawing in almost 40,000 migrants hoping to strike it rich. Large gold dredges began industrial mining operations; however the last dredge was shut down in 1966. Today the dredges serve as monumental historic site of the gold mining era of the area.

Dawson City is a great stop for group and individual travelers exploring the Top of the World Highway traversing from Alaska through to the Yukon Territory. It is also the half way mark for the Yukon International Dog Sled Race each February – the world’s toughest dog sled race.
