The Kodiak Island Archipelago is located in the Gulf of Alaska about 30 miles across Shelikof Strait, and 252 air miles southwest of Anchorage. This sheltered sanctuary offer visitors an up close and personal experience with one of Alaska’s most well-known residences – the Kodiak Brown Bear.
Bear-viewing is, indeed, one of the most popular activities on Kodiak Island. The best time to see a Kodiak bear is during July, August and September and the best way to do so is in the company of a knowledgeable guide. Full and multi-day trips are offered during the bear season from Anchorage with easy accessibility by air and for the seafarers, Alaska Ferry also makes a stop to the island with direct services from Homer, just over 220 miles from Anchorage.
