Orca Camp - Johnstone Strait

4 Days / 3 Nights
Port McNeill to Port McNeill
From USD$1,147 per person
View Map

Few camping experiences will match the fascination and beauty of this sea kayaking adventure in Johnstone Strait, one of the best places in the world to watch Orcas in the wild. Situated on the beautiful shoreline and beach adjacent to old growth forest, the base camp is the perfect place for an interpretive hike, to photograph wildlife, go tide-pooling or fish right off the shore.

Spend days watching whales from the boat, base camp or in your tandem sea kayak, then retreat to the comforts of the base camp’s sleeping tents, camp kitchen and solar shower before spending time around the campfire.

Departure date

Day 1 Arrival
Meet your trip companions at 08:00am in the lobby of the Haida Way Motor Inn for an approximate 30-minute drive to Telegraph Cove where you will visit the Whale Interpretive Centre (admission included). In Telegraph Cove, the water taxi will pick up the group at approximately 10:00am and take you to the craggy shores adjacent to Robson Bight Ecological Reserve, home of the Orca Camp base camp (30 minute water taxi ride). Guides will brief you on the base camp set up, sea kayaking procedures and safety precautions before you head out for an afternoon of kayaking the quiet coves and inlets of the Johnstone Strait, keeping a watchful eye out for signs of whales in the area. When you return to camp, tuck into a hearty home-cooked dinner served oceanside!

Days 2 - 3 Orca Base Camp Exploring
You will spend your days kayaking the traditional territorial waters of Orcas, picnicking on deserted islands, enjoying short hikes and interpretive walks as well as beach-combing. Your experienced guides will take group composition, weather, ocean currents, the Orca’s travel patterns and the tides into account to make the most of your daily outings that could include: paddling west along the Vancouver Island shoreline; across the Johnstone Strait to Blackney Passage; around Hanson Island, or east for a full view of Robson Bight. Enjoy well balanced, nutritious and great tasting meals and barbecues—they taste best while watching wildlife right from the outdoor kitchen or from your folding chair on the beach, perhaps with a glass of BC wine or a steaming cup of organic coffee in your hand.

Day 4 Departure
After a last night in the tent surrounded by idyllic rainforest, the last breakfast at camp will be served. A short morning hike (quite steep in places) then leads through old-growth forest to some of Canada's biggest and oldest trees. The group gets to see a massive Cedar that's hundreds of years old and some even go as far to say it's over 1,000 years old! It's a memorable impression before leaving camp. The water taxi is scheduled to arrive at 1:30pm and the return transfer to Port McNeill is approximately 1 hour long. Arrival in Port McNeill at approximately 2:30pm. Breakfast and lunch included.
